As for me, I’m content with that, but it’s still fun to watch the show, including side appaerances from all places. Guess we can look forward to a lot of that.

In the UK, PM Cameron’s “Green Guru”, Steve Hilton suddenly comes out as a realist, saying he doubts the entire Global Warming idea.

Reports the Daily Mail:

‘I’m not sure I believe in it,’ he announced at a meeting of the Energy Department, prompting one aide to blurt out: ‘Did I just hear that correctly?’

Meanwhile, Canada seems to abandon ship as far as Kyoto goes.

“[Environment Minister, Peter] Kent said in the House of Commons on Nov. 22 he won’t sign a document at the Durban conference that extends the Kyoto targets.

‘Canada goes to Durban with a number of countries sharing the same objective, and that is to put Kyoto behind us,’ Kent said.” according to CTV News.

And this is just the beginning. Roughly, on the table is: Kyoto, expiring next year. The EU, not having any problems with the obligations, are for an extension, and the big players never joined. A global binding treaty that was hoped for in Copenhagen and now, if ever, might appear at least as a draft resolution in three years.

Remains the 100 billions, pledged, but still unclear how, to be spread over the earth. This is COP17. Guess the by now professional summit globerotters find that a fair sum for others to pay, in order to continue the circus.

Good sense on climate on the eve of COP17, the UN climate conference in Durban, South Africa

On Friday and Saturday, November 25th & 26th, as the UN prepared to kick off COP17, the UN Conference on Climate Change, in Durban, South Africa, CFACT, the European Institute for Climate and Energy (EIKE) and others co-sponsored a climate conference of our own in beautiful Munich, Germany. EIKE was launched in 2007 in Berlin. CFACT is a proud founding member.

Interview with
EIKE President Dr. Holger Thuss

CFACT: What has been the public mood in Germany about global warming?

For years, large parts of the population were buying into the IPCC’s position without question. Others had some doubt, but could not find any reliable source in their own language to educate themselves about anything about climate that did not favor the Green’s narrative. It was terribly one-sided.

Are things changing?

The media, while still often hostile, now takes serious interest in our activities and today is willing to openly question whether the IPCC and climate campaigners are always right. Today, more and more people in Germany realize they have been misinformed and I can say without exaggerating that our work played an important part in this. We see a real change, not just among ordinary citizens, but also business leaders, lawmakers, media executives and the consulting industry (which is very influential in Germany). People from every sector of society are giving positive feedback, attending events, buying our publications and are now not shy about giving us advice. People read the newspaper and decided for themselves that something didn’t smell right. EIKE with the help from CFACT gave them the facts and a way to meet one another, organize and communicate.

What was it like organizing the first real organization in Germany to question climate orthodoxy?

We had resistance from all sides. We needed 1 1/2 years to register and organize – it took that long to overcome bureaucratic resistance. It was even worse to deal with the hostile media which didn’t hesitate to tell outright lies about our funding, research and the qualifications of our experts – who are distinguished academics from prestigious universities! Some climate radicals tried to make a big deal about the relationship between EIKE and CFACT and just can’t seem to grasp that organizations can be friends too and cooperate together to do great work. Today EIKE is proud to welcome cooperation and support from many diverse and talented people and organizations. The momentum is on our side.

Tell us about the climate conference program.

We have now conducted two workshops and four major conferences. Every one has been a success and each was larger than the one before. There is real excitement. We just completed our first conference in Munich, which was timed to take place at the start of the UN climate conference in Durban. I was very pleased to realize that 90 percent of the people attending were new. They heard we were going to be in their region, wanted to be with us and were willing to reach into their own pockets to support the conference financially. They came not only from Southern Germany, but from Austria, Switzerland and even South Korea and Paraguay. We are rather proud to be able to offer attendees simultaneous German and English translations throughout the conference.

What were some highlights of this weekend’s conference?

Almost every presentation was a highlight because we heard state of the art science from such distinguished researchers as Henrik Svensmark from Denmark, Nir Shaiviv from Israel, Gernot Patzelt from Austria and Jan Veizer from Canada. We also covered policy and legal aspects related to the downsides of renewable energy and of course the Climategate scandal parts one and two from fascinating speakers such as Donna Lafromboise from Canada and Chris Horner from the U.S. We had so many more truly brilliant presenters that I hesitate to mention any names at all, because each is worthy and we are extremely grateful to them all.

What message can CFACT carry from Munich to the UN’s COP17 in Durban?

We want the UN and everyone reading this to know that the IPCC reports have been proclaiming their conclusions as unquestionable scientific facts, when actually their science is faulty and Climategate shows the UN has placed its trust in the wrong people. We call for open minds and vigorous debate without fear. The IPCC should be replaced by a more credible institution, perhaps one uniting research institutions from around the world, free from bias and advocacy.
After recent attempts to ban the scientifically undesirable paper by renown scientists Spencer & Braswell and the ban of the climate-critical conference at the Belgian Society of European Engineers and Industrialists (SEII) by IPCC Vice Chair Prof. J. van Ypersele, the Faculty for Physics and Geosciences of the University of Leipzig, Germany, is the next to suppress open scientific debate.

Last Tuesday, University of Leipzig science faculty dean Prof. Dr. Jürgen Haase barred a climate seminar organized by (his own) geography professor Werner Kirstein, as well as the use of an auditorium of his own institute (!) and participation by European Institute for Climate and Energy (EIKE) Vice President Michael Limburg as one of the the main speakers. Fortunately the ban was later relaxed and the seminar was allowed to go ahead.

The reason for originally having banned the seminar was a dissertation authored by Michael Limburg, which was critical of climate-science and was submitted to the faculty in March 2010. Two reviewers rejected the dissertation claiming, among other points, that it was inadequate. This is why Limburg was not welcome as a speaker, according to a letter from the Dean. The fact that the same dissertation had been recommended for acceptance by 4 other renowned professors went unmentioned by Haase. Limburg immediately challenged the ban.

What was so inconvenient about Limburg’s dissertation?

Under the supervision of Prof. Werner Kirstein, Limburg had written a dissertation that examined the quality of historical global temperature and sea level data in detail. His conclusions were damning. Using accepted rules for science and measurement, Limburg’s results showed that the datasets did not allow sea level and temperature change over the last 120-150 years to be determined anywhere near the alleged accuracies of millimetres or tenths of a degree Celsius respectively as claimed by the IPCC. The range of uncertainty, in both global mean temperature and sea level, is considerably greater than the total respective changes given by the IPCC. Every factor in attributing the possible causes of the changes was, at best, scientifically questionable.

Naturally, the faculty searched – and found – the “right” reviewers for assessing Limburg’s dissertation. In his decision to ban Limburg from speaking, Haase quoted only the objectively unfair and negative assessments. The fact that four other university professors had recommended the dissertation be accepted got no mention by Haase. Limburg officially contested the assessment delivered by the two reviewers, but they have taken their time to respond. Up to today there is still no response. Now a legal battle appears inevitable. Science has again been cast aside.

The high point of the whole affair is the open attempt by the University of Leipzig to silence Lim¬burg – even though he had been officially invited by a full professor. The Leipzig University faculty appears to be completely oblivious to this unworthy conduct.

Open debate is essential for the progress of science

This brings up Voltaire, the most famous philosopher of our time, and his words to his harshest opponent: ‘Sir, I do not agree with your opinion and I fully oppose you. But I would give up my life to assure that you will always be allowed to publicly express your opinion’. At the University of Leipzig, there has to be some colleagues among the philosophy faculty who are familiar with those words. But it looks as if the University leadership is not among them.

Bonn, Germany, June 2011

The view is awesome, the food is great, the historic monuments are impressing, but the delegates are bored – in other words: we are in Bonn, Germany, where 3500 delegates meet for just another UN Climate Change Conference. The meeting is the second in a row of meetings leading to the grand climate conference in Durban, South Africa, where the next Kyoto-styled climate agreement is supposed to be adopted. However, the big news from Bonn is there is no news, despite the earlier announcements of Christiana Figueres that there is “hope” for a second Kyoto treaty and that many governments expressed their interest in promoting a “low carbon economy”. For reasons unknown so far, the UNFCC, the climate body of the UN, of which Ms. Figueres is the Secretary General, was unable to convene the opening plenary session until the evening of the first conference day. Thousands of government and NGO delegates were waiting in the grand meeting room and in the hallways – and nothing happened so far.

There are various theories what is going on behind closed doors. Since Ms. Figueres greatest concern was the “deadlock” of the international climate negotiations as the main result of the Bangkok meeting earlier this year, it must be exactly this “deadlock” that is preventing Ms. Figueres from officially opening the conference. Major nations such as China, India, Russia and Brazil are apparently not at all ready to follow the way to the very restrictive “carbon economy” drafted by UN bureaucrats and green gurus. Meanwhile, some hundred “premium” delegates convene behind closed doors in a room called “G77 and China” since the early morning. The public and NGOs are excluded.

CFACT, that is observing the conference with delegates on the ground, was however able to obtain at least some information: key players behind closed doors – as the group name indicates – are China and the EU under the leadership of the German government. While the former is the strongest opponent of further restricting economic development and “poverty eradication”, the latter has a lot to loose in case the entire project of internationally binding carbon emission targets is falling into pieces. While some British and US delegates were seen waiting in the grand plenary hall, none of the senior German and Chinese officials has been seen. And www.busnessgreen.com quoted chief US negotiator Todd Stern arguing that extending Kyoto was “unrealistic”, and “legally binding international obligations to cut emissions are not necessary”. Other features show in the same direction: it is obvious that the numbers of government officials went down dramatically. It is no longer difficult to find accommodation in Bonn during the climate talks – which was unthinkable during the same talks a year ago. Media coverage and the number of accredited journalists went down as well. The most obvious is however the small number and the negligible visibility of green NGOs. What we see is however a shift of the focus and an adjustment of their strategy. Green NGOs are still influencing the governments all over the “western” world big time. From their perspective, anti-carbon policies can be far easier implemented through “like-minded” governments and government agencies such as EPA. Former green street activists have over the years evolved into white collar activists and are much lesser dependent on the output of UN conferences. With close relations to the mainstream media, the UN is also no longer needed to influence the public debate. On the other hand, it isn’t of course totally impossible that some kind of deal eventually leads to another agreement Kyoto-style. A first step in this direction would be an agreement on the continuation of the international climate talks. These so-called commitments of the Annex-1-parties under the Kyoto protocol are discussed by a special ad hoc working group. But it is yet to early for a critical review.

und Prof. emeritus of environmental science der University of Virginia.

(DNSC).

8 International Energy-and Climate Conference , 3 -4 December 2010, Berlin

Senior Research Fellow arbeitete.
In
of Buckingham 2001 bewogen ihn Vice-Chancellor zu berufen.

As fun as you can have, in the company of all sorts of people, there is something depressing over these climate conferences. Delegates looking serious while spending other people’s money on down-right dangerous schemes, young people, who ought to be either in school, or out partying, or protesting the real injustices in this world, standing outside telling the lunch-eaters to spend more. Often financed by government. The police working overtime, and those fringe groups who travel around the world just in order to pick a fight with the former. A sort of holiday, I presume, like inter-railing or camping. Most of these elements, both in Copenhagen and at the recent G8/G20 summit, would probably go to the international congress of scrapbookers, if it meant they could get into trouble – and media – along the way.

In Cancun, the drug war is dragging on, with recent victims in the shootings. The hurricane season has just started, and will probably end right in time for the summit. If the so called world leaders decide, which is most likely, to both turn up and to help spread climate hysteria during the months to come, this will – just as in Copenhagen – make life really difficult for the local population.

But maybe that is just as well. Far from wishing anyone any harm, I am somehow looking forward to the next debacle. On a side note, one of the key players, the European Union, got their new presidency today. It’s Belgium, and Belgium currently has no government, since the recent elections.

I keep telling myself, it’ll be fun. At least to see the naked emperor walking down the streets of Cancun.

Tremendous news: but where are the jobs and how much do they cost ?

At a conference organized recently by the Heartland Institute, our colleagues at the young Juan de Mariana Institute of Spain produced a devastating presentation of the green “bubble” economy, showing not only the true cost of renewable energy subsidies, but also how this hugely destructive policy is putting existing forms of energy at unsustainable risks.

As Gabriel Calzada put it, “where is the green worker?” At the outset, workers are of course busily installing wind farms, solar panels and so on. In fact, some 60 per cent of jobs are dealing with the installation of such equipment. The Spanish government boasted the creation of some 50,000 new jobs in 2008. Yes, but each of them cost more than 500,000 euros (to be renewed ?).

The study produced by Juan de Mariana Institute showed that subsidies awarded to “green” technologies represented twice the electricity bill in 2008. In terms of unitary costs, these were more than three times as expensive as other energy sources.

Also, it turned out that Spanish solar panels were so efficient that they generated current even during the night. Claro que si ! Kudos to Gabriel and his colleagues for revealing these and other scams. Porqué pagar más ?
