It’s strange. Once again, a UNFCC conference coincides with a natural catastrophe.

As usual, the delegates and the NGO are lining up for another preparatory meeting in Bonn. If they can, that is, as another volcano erupted on Iceland and – though it seems calm today – disrupts flight to, in particular, Germany.

As all sensible people know, and as I’ve been writing before, a volcano is not man made, it’s a dangerous force of nature. This will not hinder the people in Bonn from pondering over the sign of Armageddon and that maybe, after all, it’s natures revenge for CO2 emissions.

A striking observation is that in the media I’ve been able to follow the past days, in Belgium, Sweden and international press, the focus is entirely on the effects on – especially – air traffic in continental Europe and cross Atlantic transports. Anyone heard from the Icelanders? My friends there are rather sturdy people, so you mostly get rather rough jokes, but it’s no joke living in the shadow of an erupting volcano.

A good idea for the idealists going to Bonn, (presumably taking the train) is to skip the conference and go as a cleaning patrol to Iceland. If they are serious about the environmental mission that is.

That the activities behind the scenes before, during and after last year’s circus in Copenhagen were everything from strange to dirty is no surprise. For example, CFACT Europe, together with the paper Berlingske Tiderne in Denmark, discovered the sudden shift in the official Danish attitude towards Dalai Lama, an apparent effort to offer the difficult Chinese delegation something to chew on.

With the recent publication of the eneourmos amount of documents at Wikileaks, even more light is shed on the power play and virtual extortion to get tax money in so called climate aid.

The UK paper, The Guardian – a publication which has, for some strange reason, always been very interested in CFACT – is one of the first to compile the climate related documents. Draw your own conclusions, but please admit that it’s entertaining reading. 

We learn why the Maldives was the island country most active. We find out the play between Bolivia and Denmark. And we get a glimpse of the power play, especially with regards to the US and China. In one of the dispatches from the US Embassy in Belgium, we also can read a first hand account of the frustration and anger displayed by the EU President, Herman van Rompuy over the chaotic negotiations and what he perceive as a play against the European Union.

Yes, I confess, the many “forums” and I gave interviews to mark the release of this book are only variations on the same theme that the IPCC is a false political organization;

Yes, I confess, I never thought through a quarter of the nonsense that I stirred;

Yes, I confess, whole chapters of my book were “blown away” by agencies and foreign think tanks;

Yes, I confess, I have extensively studied the precepts of Gramsci and Bernays (Propaganda, 1928) and the strategy developed by the tobacco lobby in the sixties and later to counter the first scientific studies attesting to the harm of smoking;

Yes, I confess, I have therefore exploited the noble concept of doubt to discredit the scientific work of the IPCC — I am a merchant of doubt;

Yes, I confess, I never doubted global warming or its anthropogenic origins, although these issues are beyond my very modest skill;

Yes, I confess, I have distinguished the debate about the IPCC’s climate debate itself so as to insinuate doubt into the minds of citizens;

Yes, I confess, though imperfect like everything that is human, the IPCC is indeed scientific, not political as vilely I tried to make believe;

Yes, I confess, I fear my safety forbids me to say more;

Yes, I confess, I am not a prostitute, but an intellectual climate realist.

Aujourd’hui que l’Académie des sciences a publié son rapport sur le climat, dans lequel elle valide globalement les trois mille pages du dernier rapport du GIEC et ses conclusions,  il est temps que tombent les masques. J’ai honte.

Ceci est la confession d’un prostitué climatique.

Oui, je le confesse, j’ai rédigé un ouvrage critiquant le Groupe d’experts intergouvernemental sur l’évolution du climat (GIEC) sous de fallacieux prétextes;

Oui, je le confesse, mes motifs n’étaient pas désintéressés;

Oui, je le confesse, je me suis vendu à des lobbys, pour des raisons à la fois financières et idéologiques;

Oui, je le confesse, le réchauffement climatique m’est apparu comme une menace potentiellement léthale pour ce capitalisme mondialisé que j’idolâtre;

Oui, je le confesse, mon ouvrage sur le GIEC est une commande d’un cartel de compagnies, notamment pétrolières, notamment européennes, dont la publication visait à m’ouvrir les colonnes des quotidiens et les plateaux de télévision pour toucher le grand public;

Oui, je le confesse, les multiples « tribunes » et interviews que j’ai données à l’occasion de la sortie de ce livre ne sont que des variations sur le même thème mensonger du GIEC comme organisme politique ;

Oui, je le confesse, je n’ai jamais cru au quart des sornettes que j’y agite;

Oui, je le confesse, des chapitres entiers m’en ont été « soufflés » par des officines et des think tanks étrangers;

Oui, je le confesse, j’ai longuement étudié les préceptes de Gramsci et de Bernays (Propagande, 1928) et la stratégie développée par le lobby du tabac dans les années soixante et suivantes pour contrer les premières études scientifiques qui attestaient de la nocivité de la cigarette;

Oui, je le confesse, j’ai dès lors instrumentalisé le noble concept de doute pour jeter le discrédit sur les travaux scientifiques du GIEC, je ne suis qu’un marchand de doute;

Oui, je le confesse, je n’ai jamais douté du réchauffement climatique ni de son caractère anthropique, bien que ces questions soient très au delà de mes modestes compétences;

Oui, je le confesse, je n’ai distingué le débat sur le GIEC du débat climatique proprement dit que pour insinuer le doute dans l’esprit des citoyens;

Oui, je le confesse, bien qu’imparfait comme tout ce qui est humain, le GIEC est bel et bien un organisme scientifique et non politique comme j’ai vilement tenté de le faire accroire;

Oui, je le confesse, j’ai peur et ma sécurité m’interdit d’en dire davantage ;

Oui, je le confesse, je ne suis pas un intellectuel mais un prostitué climatique.

As fun as you can have, in the company of all sorts of people, there  is something depressing over these climate conferences. Delegates looking serious while spending other people’s money on down-right dangerous schemes, young people, who ought to be either in school, or out partying, or protesting the real injustices in this world, standing outside telling the lunch-eaters to spend more. Often financed by government. The police working overtime, and those fringe groups who travel around the world just in order to pick a fight with the former. A sort of holiday, I presume, like inter-railing or camping. Most of these elements, both in Copenhagen and at the recent G8/G20 summit, would probably go to the international congress of scrapbookers, if it meant they could get into trouble – and media – along the way.

In Cancun, the drug war is dragging on, with recent victims in the shootings. The hurricane season has just started, and will probably end right in time for the summit. If the so called world leaders decide, which is most likely, to both turn up and to help spread climate hysteria during the months to come, this will – just as in Copenhagen – make life really difficult for the local population.

But maybe that is just as well. Far from wishing anyone any harm, I am somehow looking forward to the next debacle. On a side note, one of the key players, the European Union, got their new presidency today. It’s Belgium, and Belgium currently has no government, since the recent elections.

I keep telling myself, it’ll be fun. At least to see the naked emperor walking down the streets of Cancun.

What better to celebrate than individual freedom? For the third year in a row CFACT Europe joined conservative and libertarian leaders to raise a glass to liberty at CNE’s Capitalist Ball on 12th October at the usual venue, the Concert Noble, in Brussels.


CFACT first participated in the “International Leaders Summit” at the European Parliament and the Rennaisance Brussels Hotel.

Guests received a surprise welcome from anti-capitalist protestors outside the Concert Noble. They were a fairly polite group as protestors go. Many of our fellow guests grew up in an Eastern Europe without capitalist freedom and prosperity. They are always willing to rebut this kind of foolishness with memories that are all too fresh.

At the Capitalist Ball the food, drink, music and dance were reliably good. Better still was the chance to discuss CFACT’s latest efforts with old friends and new. This year’s ball was held in honor of the late Dr. Milton Friedman.

CFACT’s guests were very pleased when Dr. Cécille Philippe was presented with an award. Dr. Philppe serves on CFACT EU’s board of advisors and her work with the Molinari Economic Institute is an inspiration to many.

Over the last few years the Capitalist Ball has given CFACT a chance to bring together people and organizations who usually connect by email, the internet and phone. We thank everyone at the Centre for the New Europe for making this possible.

On October 11, CFACT Europe’s Executive Director Dr. Holger Thuss presented Edgar Gaertner’s new “Eco-Nihilism. A Critique of Political Ecology” (Öko-Nihilismus. Eine Kritik der Politischen Ökologie) at a private reception in the Brussels Renaissance Hotel.

The many invited guests, mainly from the media, like-minded think tanks and assistants of MEPs, were able to listen to some introductory remarks by author Edgar Gaertner. There was also an opportunity to purchase sigend copies of the new book that was recently published with the support of CFACT Europe.
